The purpose of this blog is to discuss chapters 10 and 17 of Jesus Before Christianity in comparison with John 6:1-15 of the Bible and our everyday life -- including media.
The movie, “V for Vendetta” is a key example of governmental oppression, the very kind Jesus protested against. The government and laws were meant to protect the people, but instead these institutions harm the people, being, “responsible for the wrongful deaths of hundreds of thousands of people”. Fear, as the movie states, should not be used as a tactic for compliance to the government. The government and its laws should be made to serve the people, not the other way around. In “V for Vendetta”, the government fears the freedom of its people, afraid that said freedom will instigate chaos. They are slaves to the law, hence they make others slaves to their power. In this situation depicted in the movie, Jesus would advocate “dethroning the power”. However, it is important to note that while the situation in this movie is similar to the one so opposed by Jesus, Jesus cannot be considered similar to the vigilante this film stars. The vigilante utilizes violence in order to defend his beliefs and enact his personal vendetta. Rather, check the clip from “A Man for All Seasons”. However, “V for Vendetta”, is a good example of a dramatization of the situation Jesus so opposed, when people serve power, and not when power serves the people.
